What is BS EN 17106-3-1 about?
BS EN 17106-3-1 is the third part of the first part of the multi-series of documents that is applicable to road operation machinery.
BS EN 17106-3-1 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to winter service machines – snow clearing machines with rotating tools and snow ploughs when used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer (see Annex A) associated with the whole lifetime of the machine.
Note 1: The requirements of BS EN 17106-3-1 are complementary to the common requirements formulated in EN 17106-1:2021.
Note 2: BS EN 17106-3-1 does not repeat the requirements from EN 17106-1:2021 but supplements or modifies the requirements for winter service machines – snow clearing machines with rotating tools and snow ploughs.
Note 3: BS EN 17106-3-1 is not applicable to snow clearing machines with rotating tools and snow ploughs manufactured before the date of its publication.
Who is BS EN 17106-3-1 for?
BS EN 17106-3-1 on operation of winter service machine is relevant to:
- Machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises)
- Health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance etc.)
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
- Machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises)
- Machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs)
Why should you use BS EN 17106-3-1?
BS EN 17106-3-1 addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations, and events that may occur when winter service machines – snow clearing machines with rotating tools and snow ploughs – are used as intended and under misuse conditions that are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer over the machine's lifetime.
Compliance to BS EN 17106-3-1 can ensure that winter service machines take into account the health and safety of the operators. You will also be informed of the machinery in concern, as well as the amount to which it is protected from hazards, hazardous conditions, or hazardous events.
As a result, timely action to eliminate or reduce risk can be taken. The hazards mentioned include:
- Mechanical hazards
- Electrical hazards
- Thermal hazards
- Hazards generated by noise
- Hazards generated by neglecting ergonomic principles in machinery design
- Unexpected start-up, unexpected overrun/overspeed
As a buyer of BS EN 17106-3-1, you will be able to ensure the safety and protection of people working with winter service machines by preventing or minimizing the incidence of accidents that may take place due to low visibility. Overall, this enables you to optimize operational efficiency thereby successfully completing tasks and projects in a timely, cost-effective manner.
