What is BS EN 17266 -Determination of organomercury in seafood about?
BS EN 17266 is a European standard on the determination of organomercury in seafood to prevent adverse health effects.
BS EN 17266 specifies a method for the determination of organomercury in seafood by elemental mercury analysis.
The method specified by BS EN 17266 has been successfully validated in an interlaboratory study on oyster tissue, mussel tissue, lobster hepatopancreas, dogfish liver, and tuna at levels from 0,01 mg/kg to 5 mg/kg referring to dry weight and expressed as mercury. The limit of quantification is approximately 0,01 mg/kg of organomercury.
Who is BS EN 17266-Determination of organomercury in seafood for?
BS EN 17266 on the determination of organomercury in seafood is useful for:
- Food scientists
- Food laboratories
- Food technologists
- Food health and safety departments
Why should you use BS EN 17266-Determination of aluminium in seafood?
Organomercury has severe health effects on the human body resulting from headaches, tremors, muscle weakness and twitching, emotional changes, kidney damage.
BS EN 17266 provides you with a method in which organomercury in seafood/fishery products is separated from the matrix by double liquid-liquid extraction, first with an organic solvent (toluene) and subsequently with L-cysteine solution, and is determined by elemental mercury analyser. Elemental mercury analyser is a single-purpose atomic absorption spectrophotometer for mercury determination.
The methods and procedures provided by BS EN 17266 assist you to detect organomercury content that can be found in seafood/fishery products to ensure preventing severe health issues in human beings.
By adopting BS EN 17266 the user can enhance the safety of seafood stuff to prevent severe health hazards.
