What is BS EN 772-21 - Water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units about?
BS EN 772 is a European standard that discusses methods of test for masonry units. The main objective of the BS EN 772 series is to provide the best industry methods to determine the quality and performance of construction products and materials such that they contribute to the structural integrity of your civil engineering works.
BS EN 772-21 is the 21st part of the BS EN 772 series that specifies a method of determining the water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units by immersing them in cold water.
Who is BS EN 772-21 - Water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units for?
BS EN 772-21 on water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units is relevant to:
- Construction industry
- Masonry construction companies
- Manufacturers of concrete and concrete products
- Cement production plants
- Builders
- Civil engineers
- Contractors
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS EN 772-21 - Water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units?
Water absorption causes a reduction of the water/cement which lead to poor quality of mortar leading to deformation of masonry. Therefore, the amount of water present in the masonry joint at the time of loading is an important influence on the creep potential in the masonry as well as the degree of hydration. In order to understand the occurrence of water absorption in masonry, the absorption properties of aggregate in concrete may be useful to explain this phenomenon.
In this regard, BS EN 772-21 specifies the materials and equipment required for testing masonry units.
BS EN 772-21 guides you through the preparation and drying of test specimens prior to testing, as well as the test technique for determining the water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units by cold water absorption.
As a result, you can determine the extent of water absorption of clay and calcium silicate masonry units by complying with BS EN 772-21, that can demonstrate whether or not your products are fit for its intended use. This assessment can ultimately play a vital role in achieving the desired design mix, such that the structural stability of your construction works is maintained.
