What is BS EN IEC 60051‑6- Ohmmeters and conductance meters about?
BS EN IEC 60051‑6 is a safety standard on direct acting indicating electrical measuring instruments and accessories.
BS EN IEC 60051‑6 applies to direct acting indicating measuring ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters. BS EN IEC 60051‑6 also applies to non-interchangeable accessories of ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters.
BS EN IEC 60051‑6 also applies to a direct acting indicating electrical measuring instrument whose scale marks do not correspond directly to its electrical input quantity, provided that the relationship between them is known. BS EN IEC 60051‑6 also applies to electronic devices of ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters in their measuring and/or auxiliary circuits.
NOTE: BS EN IEC 60051‑6 does not apply to insulation ohmmeters, grounding ohmmeters and external commercial power ohmmeters (impedance meters), and conductance meters.
Who is BS EN IEC 60051‑6- Ohmmeters and conductance meters for?
BS EN IEC 60051‑6 on special requirements for ohmmeters and conductance meters is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of ohmmeters and conductance meters
- Testing authorities
- Manufacturers of multifunction calibrators
- Electromagnetic engineers
- Electrical engineers
- Electricians
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60051‑6- Ohmmeters and conductance meters?
IEC 60051 is published in separate parts under the general title direct acting indicating analogue electrical measuring instruments and their accessories.
BS EN IEC 60051‑6 provides special requirements for ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters. BS EN IEC 60051‑6 is not complete and is read in conjunction with IEC 60051-1. BS EN IEC 60051‑5 assists the user with the electrical safety requirements. Ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters are described according to
their measure resistance values by a two-terminal or a four-terminal method. Ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters are also described according to whether they have a linear scale or a non-linear scale. Ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters are classified in one of the accuracy classes denoted by the following class indices: 0,05, 0,1, 0,2, 0,5, 1, 1,5, 2, 2,5, 3, 5, 10, 20.
Overall, BS EN IEC 60051‑6 is useful as it assists with direct acting indicating analogue electrical measuring instruments and their accessories specially ohmmeters (impedance meters) and conductance meters which can help you in your business. It provides guidance with all the safety measures that you need to take.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60051‑6:2018 supersedes BS 89‑6:1990, which is withdrawn. BS EN IEC 60051‑6:2018 replaces the fourth edition published in 1984. BS EN IEC 60051‑6:2018 constitutes a technical revision. BS EN IEC 60051‑6:2018 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- Updating content in line with new editions of IEC 60051-1 and IEC 60051-9
- Addition of Annex A to specify the nonconformity classification of test items
