What is BS EN IEC 60172 about?
BS EN IEC 60172 specifies, in accordance with the provisions of IEC 60216-1, a method for evaluating the temperature index of enamelled wire, varnished or unvarnished with an impregnating agent, and of tape wrapped round and rectangular wire, in the air at atmospheric pressure by periodically monitoring changes in response to AC proof voltage tests. This procedure does not apply to fibre-insulated wire or wire covered with tapes containing inorganic fibres.
NOTE: The data obtained according to this test procedure provide the designer and development engineer with information for the selection of winding wire for further evaluation of insulation systems and equipment tests.
Who is BS EN IEC 60172 for?
BS EN IEC 60172 on the determination of the temperature index is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of tape wrapped winding wires
- Manufacturers of applications that require electrical transference
- Manufacturers of electrical applications
- Telecommunication organisations
- Electrical engineers
- Mechanical engineers
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60172?
Winding wires are largely used in the construction of applications such as transformers, motors and generators. The main purpose of a winding wire is to interchange electrical energy with magnetic energy. In this regard, determining the temperature index of enamelled and tape wrapped winding wires informs you about the heat and mechanical resistant properties of the product.
BS EN IEC 60172 is developed to provide a safe and efficient means to connect wires to terminals while still providing a high level of reliability by preventing the electrical current from accidentally passing to other wires, which could lead to a short circuit or even start an electrical fire.
BS EN IEC 60172 is beneficial as it minimizes the bending force necessary to shape the test specimen since wires with high stiffness can yield specimens with poor wire-to-wire contact areas.
The main advantage with BS EN IEC 60172 is that it provides you with the indications of right insulation materials to be considered for your application needs.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60172:2021 replaces the fourth edition published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The following technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
- Revision of the definition of thermal index
- Revision of time to failure
- Revisions to reduce the range wire size range to which the test applies
- Revisions to tape wrapped round and enamelled or tape wrapped rectangular wire for clarity
- Revision to add the correlation coefficient, r to the report
