What is BS EN IEC 60317-62 about?
This part of IEC 60317 forms an element of a series of standards which deals with insulated wires used for windings in electrical equipment.
BS EN IEC 60317-62 is the 62nd part of multi-series that specifies the requirements of polyester glass-fibre wound, silicone resin or varnish impregnated bare, grade 1 or grade 2 enamelled rectangular copper winding wires, temperature index 200. The impregnating agent is a silicone-containing resin or varnish.
NOTE: For this type of wire, the heat shock test is inappropriate and therefore a heat shock temperature cannot be established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature cannot be specified.
Who is BS EN IEC 60317-62 for?
BS EN IEC 60317-62 on particular types of winding wires is relevant to:
- Copper wire manufacturers
- Manufacturers of applications that require electrical transference
- Manufacturers of electrical applications
- Telecommunication organisations
- Electrical engineers
- Mechanical engineers
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60317-62?
Winding wires are largely used in the construction of applications such as transformers, motors and generators. The main purpose of a winding wire is to interchange electrical energy with magnetic energy.
BS EN IEC 60317-62 includes winding wires with fibre covering of a combination of polyester and glass fibres and provides six grades of thickness.
BS EN IEC 60317-62 covers appearance and dimension parameters, the assessment of which is essential to determine whether electrical properties are compromised. You can find the reference standard for these specifications in BS EN IEC 60317-62.
Adopting the specifications for the particular type of winding wire in compliance with BS EN IEC 60317-62 will ensure properties such as mechanical strength, temperature and heat resistance remain intact for the optimal performance of your specific application. This can help make the right production decisions based on thickness and grades, to ensure durability and long service life of rectangular copper winding wires.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60317-62:2020 supersedes BS EN 60317‑62:2012, which is withdrawn. Some of the changes are:
- Revision to the title of the standard to describe the construction of the wire more precisely
- Revision to Clause 1, the scope of the standard, to provide more detail of the wire construction
- Revision to 3.2.2, general winding wire requirements of the glass fibre covering
