What is BS EN IEC 60404-7 about?
BS EN IEC 60404-7 is the seventh part of a multi-series of documents that specifies a method of measurement of the coercivity of magnetic materials in an open magnetic circuit.
BS EN IEC 60404-7 is applicable to all magnetic materials with coercivities from 0,2 A/m to 160 kA/m.
Note: Examples of magnetic materials covered by this BS EN IEC 60404-7 are amorphous alloys, nanocrystalline alloys, all Soft magnetic crystalline materials (soft ferrites, hard metals, semi-hard magnetic alloys.
Who is BS EN IEC 60404-7 for?
BS EN IEC 60404-7 on magnetic materials is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of magnetic materials
- Mining industry
- Manufacturers and testers of electrical applications that involve magnetic circuits
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60404-7?
Magnetic circuits are employed to efficiently channel magnetic fields in many applications such as electric motors, generators, and transformers. Meanwhile, coercivity is the value of the coercive field strength in a material when the magnetic flux density, magnetic polarization or magnetization is brought from saturation by a monotonically changing magnetic field, to zero.
BS EN IEC 60404-7 is thus useful in assessing the magnetic strength of materials while evaluating the extent of resistance to external magnetic fields, without becoming demagnetised.
Through BS EN IEC 60404-7, you can maintain properties such high permeability and high coercivity in magnetic materials that aid in optimal performance of the end-use application. Moreover, the accuracy in evaluation can help with advancements in other fields such as data storage etc.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60404-7:2020 supersedes BS EN 10330:2015, which is withdrawn. Some the changes are:
- Circuit diagram for methods A and B were simplified and the fluxgate probes inside the solenoid have been added
- Compensation for the earth’s magnetic field and for static and dynamic magnetic noise fields has been added
- Magnetic shielding of the measuring region has been added
