What is BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46-Performance of operating tables about?
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 is part 2-46 of the multi-series standard that discusses medical electrical equipment. BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 outlines safety requirements for operating tables, whether having electrical parts, including transporters, used for the transportation of the operating tabletop to or from the base or pedestal of an operating table with the detachable operating tabletop.
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 provides guidance on establishing basic safety and essential performance requirements for operating tables as defined in 201.3.201.
If operating tables will be used in combination with diagnostic and/or therapeutic devices the relevant requirements of each related standard are also applicable.
Note-
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 does not apply to dental patient chairs, examination chairs, and couches, patient-supporting systems of diagnostic and therapeutic devices, operating table heating blankets, patient transfer equipment, delivery tables, and beds, medical beds, and field tables.
Who is BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46-Performance of operating tables for?
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 on ME operating tables is useful for:
- Manufacturers of operating tables for medical uses
- Test centres and medical laboratories
- Regulatory authorities
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46-Performance of operating tables?
The operating table is intended to use support and positions a patient during surgical
procedures for not more than 24h. The mobile operating table is intended to be relocated from one location to another while supported by its wheels or equivalent means. Operating tables provide elevated surfaces that support the patient’s body during surgical procedures, stabilizing the patient’s position and providing optimal exposures of the surgical fields.
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 guides you with essential performance requirements and protection against electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, unwanted and excessive radiation hazards, excessive temperatures, and other hazards for operating tables ME equipment.
BS EN IEC 60601‑2‑46 improves the performance and safety of operating tables ME equipment and minimizes hazards to the patient and operator.
A Commented Version (CMV) of this standard is available here. Please note, the CMV of the standard is not adopted, and therefore doesn’t contain an additional national foreword, or national annex that might be contained in the BS adoption of the standard. However the IEC text that forms the content of the standard is identical to the BS adoption of the standard.
Commented Versions (CMVs) are specialized publications featuring detailed commentary from technical experts on the major changes between the new edition of a standard and the previous one. Comments may include an explanation for the changes as well as information on the impact of these changes on the application and usability of the standard.
