What is BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 about?
BS EN IEC 60704 is a series on household and similar electrical appliances. BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 discusses electrical fans (including their accessories and their component parts) for household and similar use, designed for AC or DC supply.
The aim of BS EN IEC 60704 is to give direction for measuring the noise in a room resulting from the operation of a fan.
BS EN IEC 60704 applies to:
- Conventional fans
- Table fans
- Pedestal fans
- Ceiling fans
- Bladeless fans
- Wall bracket fans
- Ceiling bracket fans
- Louver fans
- Tower fans
- Ventilating and partition ventilating fans
Note: BS EN IEC 60704 does not apply to:
- Fans that are part of a ventilation system
- Fans designed exclusively for industrial purposes
- Fans that are part of an appliance (for example cooling fans)
- Fans with additional functions (for example heating, humidifying)
Who is BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 for?
BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 on household and similar electrical appliances is useful for:
- Fan manufacturers
- Research and development teams
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7?
Fans do their job best when they work silently. Noise from the fan diminishes its utility value. BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 specifically describes the determination of the noise emission of household fans in normal operation at maximum speed. Other speeds can, in addition, be used.
Household appliances that emit airborne acoustical noise can be traced and measured using various test methods mentioned in BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7. BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 discusses the measurement of sound pressure levels, calculation of sound pressure, and sound power levels.
Following the guidelines given in BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7 ensures that your users enjoy breeze from a silent fan.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7:2020 supersedes BS EN 60704-2-7:1998. BS EN IEC 60704‑2‑7:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 60704-2-7:1998. These include:
- It includes additional fan categories as defined in IEC 60879:2019 and IEC 60665:2018
- It includes standard deviations of sound power levels in 1.3
- A comparison method has been added
- The normative references have been updated (ISO 3744:2010 and ISO 3743-1:2010)
