What is BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402 about?
BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402 discusses optical fibre cables, with a focus on assessing the performance of optical ground wire (OPGW), optical phase conductor (OPPC) cables, or the optical attached cable (OPAC). The testing method described is the lightning test, that assesses the impact of lightning current on the messenger wire.
The lightning test specified in BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402 is performed on the mid-point of an OPGW sample, an OPPC sample or an OPAC sample attached to the agreed messenger.
BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402 specifies the residual strength of the cable which is to be calculated from the sum of the tensile strength of the individual wires of the cable sample submitted to the lightning strike.
Who is BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402 for?
BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402 on optical fibre cables is useful for:
- Manufacturers of fibre optic cables
- Internet communication providers
- Computer network sectors
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402?
If optical fibre cables are expected to provide consistent, high-speed transmission of data, they need to adhere to the highest quality standards. BS EN IEC 60794-1-402 walks you through the the lightning test, which is performed on OPGW, OPPC, OPAC sample cables, to test the effects of lightning on cable performance.
The measurement of the optical fibre needs to be longer than 100 m in order to detect damage to any of the fibre units (tubes) in the cable during the simulated lightning strike.
Using this test, you would be in a position to design optical fibre cables that resist lightning strikes, and remain unscathed in such situations.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402:2021 supersedes BS EN 60794‑1‑24:2014. BS EN IEC 60794‑1‑402:2021 includes a technical change with respect to BS EN 60794‑1‑24:2014 which is:
- OPPC cables are included.
