What is BS EN IEC 60974-5-Wire feeders for use in arc welding?
BS EN IEC 60974-5 is the fifth part of the IEC 60974 series that specifies safety and performance requirements for industrial and professional equipment used in arc welding and allied processes (electric arc cutting and arc spraying) to feed filler wire. The main aim of the IEC 60974 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry welding practices to achieve a good weld.
BS EN IEC 60974-5 is applicable to wire feed and to wire-feed controls that separated from the welding equipment, housed together in a single enclosure or housed in a single enclosure with other welding equipment.
Note: Typical allied processes are electric arc cutting and arc spraying.
BS EN IEC 60974-5 does not include electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, which are given in IEC 60974-10 and not applicable to spool-on torches which are covered by IEC 60974-7.
Who is BS EN IEC 60974-5- Wire feeders for use in arc welding for?
BS EN IEC 60974-5 on arc welding equipment is applicable to:
- Manufacturers of arc welding equipment
- Manufacturers of wire feeders
- Manufacturers of pressure vessels
- Sheet metal manufacturers
- Aerospace industry
- Construction, automotive, mechanical industry
- Shipbuilding industry
- Welders
Why should you use BS EN IEC 60974-5- Wire feeders for use in arc welding?
Wire feeders are used to add filler metal during robotic welding, that imparts flexibility in welding wire feed rates to suit the requirements of an assembly. Efficient wire feeders are thus crucial for achieving an accurate and stable arc.
BS EN IEC 60974-5 guidelines and recommendations can help establish the required levels of safety and credibility of wire feeders for their optimal performance. Incidents of electric shock in arc welding and allied processes can thus be avoided.
Overall, BS EN IEC 60974-5 can ensure your wire feeders align with best industry welding practices to achieve a good quality weld, and issues related to poor wire feeding are avoided.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 60974-5:2019 supersedes BS EN 60974-5:2013, which is withdrawn. BS EN IEC 60974-5:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 60974-5:2013. These include:
- Changes induced by the publication of IEC 60974-1:2017
- Addition of requirements for welding circuit connections in 6.9
