What is BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 – EMC 16 A guidelines about?
BS EN IEC 61000 is a series on Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Electromagnetic compatibility is the ability of electrical equipment and systems to function acceptably in their electromagnetic environment, by limiting the unintentional generation, propagation and reception of electromagnetic energy which may cause unwanted effects such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) or even physical damage in operational equipment. BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in residential, commercial, public, and light-industrial locations. Immunity requirements in the frequency range 0 Hz to 400 GHz are covered. No tests need to be performed at frequencies where no requirements are specified. BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 is applicable if no relevant dedicated product or product family Electromagnetic compatibility immunity standard exists.
BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 applies to electrical and electronic equipment intended to be operated in:
- Residential locations, as defined in 3.8, both indoor and outdoor
- Commercial, public, and light industrial locations, as defined in 3.9, both indoor and outdoor
BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 applies also to equipment that is battery operated or is powered by a non-public, but non-industrial, low voltage power distribution system if this equipment is intended to be used in the locations defined in BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1.
Who is BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 – EMC 16 A guidelines for?
BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 on Electromagnetic compatibility is useful for:
- Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
- Telecommunication component manufacturers
- Design engineer
- Quality control personnel
- Research and development facilities
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 – EMC 16 A guidelines?
The goal of Electromagnetic compatibility is the correct operation of different equipment in a common electromagnetic environment. It is also the name given to the associated branch of electrical engineering. BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 defines the immunity test requirements for equipment specified in the scope in relation to continuous and transient, conducted, and radiated disturbances, including electrostatic discharges.
The immunity requirements have been selected to ensure an adequate level of immunity for equipment operating within residential, commercial, public, and light-industrial locations. The levels do not, however, cover extreme cases, which may occur at any location, but with an extremely low probability of occurrence. Not all disturbance phenomena have been included for testing purposes in this standard, but only those considered as relevant for the equipment covered by BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1. These test requirements represent essential electromagnetic compatibility immunity requirements. They are specified for each port considered.
location exemplified by areas of the city centre, offices, public transport systems (road/train/underground), and modern business centres containing a concentration of office automation equipment (PCs, fax machines, photocopiers, telephones, etc.), and characterized by the fact that equipment is directly connected to a low-voltage public mains network or connected to a dedicated DC source which is intended to interface between the equipment and the low-voltage mains network. Using BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1 you understand electrical and electronic equipment intended for use in residential, commercial, public, and light-industrial locations.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1:2019 supersedes BS EN 61000‑6‑1:2007 which will be withdrawn on 22
February 2022. BS EN IEC 61000‑6‑1:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61000‑6‑1:2007. These include:
- Improvement of the environmental description
- Extension of the frequency range for the radio-frequency electromagnetic field test according to IEC 61000-4-3
- Amended test levels at particular frequencies for the radio-frequency electromagnetic field test according to IEC 61000-4-3
- Change of the repetition frequency for the fast transients, immunity test according to IEC 61000-4-4
- Introduction of requirements according to IEC 61000-4-34
