What is BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 - Radio-frequency connectors about?
BS EN IEC 61169 is a series on radio-frequency connectors. An RF connector (radio frequency connector) is an electrical connector designed to work at radio frequencies in the multi-megahertz range. Radio-frequency connectors are typically used with coaxial cables and are designed to maintain the shielding that the coaxial design offers. BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 provides test methods for the insertion loss of radio-frequency connectors.
BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 is applicable to cable RF connectors, microstrip RF connectors and RF connector adapters. BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 is also applicable to RF channels in multi-RF channel connectors and hybrid connectors which contain any combination of coaxial contact, optical fibres contact, and current-carrying electrical contact element.
Who is BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 for?
BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 on RF coaxial connectors is applicable to those entities who are industry experts in communication devices and involved in writing specifications for RF emission ranges for coaxial connectors. So, BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 is useful for:
- Communication device and equipment industry experts
- Regulatory bodies
- Research and development teams
- Product innovation teams
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 - Radio-frequency connectors?
Common types of RF connectors are used for TV receivers, two-way radio, certain WI-FI devices with removable antennas, and industrial or scientific measurements instruments using radio frequencies. BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 discusses the test methods to determine the insertion loss of these connectors. Insertion loss can be defined as loss of power resulting from the insertion of a connector or similar device into a transmission line. BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 defines two methods of testing a radio-frequency connector those are Method 1 and Method 2.
The test theory as defined in BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 states that at lower frequencies, the physical length of the test sample is less than λ/10, and the test values of the voltage/current on the test sample are independent of the test position. At higher frequencies, the physical length of the test sample is bigger than λ/10, and the characteristic impedance reflects its transmission characteristics. The voltage/current on the test sample differs at different positions. Using BS EN IEC 61169‑1‑2 you can understand test methods for the insertion loss of radio-frequency connectors.
