What is BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 about?
BS EN IEC 61290 is a series that discusses optical amplifiers. BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs) and optically amplified modules. BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 applies to OAs using optical fibre amplifiers based on either rare-earth-doped fibres or on the Raman effect, semiconductor OAs (SOAs) and planar optical waveguide amplifiers (POWAs).
The object of BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 is specifically directed to single-channel amplifiers.
BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 establishes uniform requirements for accurate and reliable measurements, by means of the optical spectrum analyser (OSA) test method, of the following OA parameters, as defined:
- Nominal output signal power
- Gain
- Polarization-dependent gain (pdg)
- Maximum output signal power
- Maximum total output power
In addition, BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 provides the test method for:
- Gain ripple (for soas).
The object of BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 is specifically directed to single-channel amplifiers.
Who is BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 for?
BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 on optical amplifiers is useful for:
- Optical cable and equipment manufacturers
- Telecommunication companies
- Optical fibre distributers
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1?
An optical amplifier is a device that amplifies an optical signal directly, without the need to first convert it to an electrical signal. BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 discusses the test methods to measure the power and gain parameters of an optical amplifier. The optical spectrum analyser method is used to analyse the parameters of an optical amplifier.
The optical spectrum analyser method as mentioned in BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1 is a precise method that is used for measuring optical spectra, based on which further analysis is often possible.
The OSA method solves the biggest drawback of the technology (speed) and retains the resolution and sensitivity of a communication line.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1:2020 supersedes BS EN 61290‑1‑1:2015. BS EN IEC 61290‑1‑1:2020 includes a technical change with respect to BS EN 61290‑1‑1:2015.
- Addition of techniques to test the gain ripple of SOAs
