What is BS EN IEC 61820‑1 - Aeronautical ground lighting (AGL) at aerodromes about?
BS EN IEC 61820 is a series of standard that defines the requirements throughout the lifecycle of an Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) system including design, installation, commissioning, maintenance, decommissioning and disposal.
BS EN IEC 61820‑1 is the first part of the multi-series that pertains to personnel and operational safety while focusing on AGL system design to maintain the lighting against any possible failure.
BS EN IEC 61820‑1 covers principles of design and installation requirements for AGL systems including control, monitoring, and transformation of energy, the cables, and any electrical component utilized to produce the light intended to be used as a visual aid for air and ground navigation.
Who is BS EN IEC 61820‑1 – AGL at aerodromes for?
BS EN IEC 61820‑1 on AGL at aerodromes is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of electrical and lighting equipment
- Designers and installers of AGL systems and related components
- Entities involved in commissioning, maintenance, decommissioning and disposal of AGL systems
- Product design engineers
- Aviation and aerospace industry
- Aeronautical engineers
- Airport authorities
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61820‑1 - Aeronautical ground lighting at aerodromes?
AGL is defined as any light specially provided as an aid to air navigation, other than a light displayed on an aircraft. While the primary goal of AGL is to improve flight safety in international air navigation, this can be achieved when electric insulation meets standardized requirements.
To harmonize the equipment requirements, six environmental classes are defined by EN IEC 61820-1.
EN IEC 61820-1 also covers design and safety requirements, compliance to which, can help prevent circuit failure and incidences of automatic disconnection of the electrical supply to an AGL load.
As a user, BS EN IEC 61820-1 assists you in defining the essential principles for providing safe, dependable, and efficient operation of AGL systems that contribute to minimizing aviation risks.
