What is BS EN IEC 62148‑1 - Fibre optic active components and devices about?
BS EN IEC 62148 is a series on fibre optic active components and devices. Fibre optic active components and devices are electronic components made up of semiconductor materials that actively manipulate electrons to perform the intended function. BS EN IEC 62148‑1 aims to assure interchangeability in physical interfaces between fibre optic active components and devices supplied by different manufacturers, but BS EN IEC 62148‑1 does not guarantee operation between such devices.
Who is BS EN IEC 62148‑1 - Fibre optic active components and devices for?
BS EN IEC 62148‑1 on fibre optic active components and devices is useful for:
- Telecommunication component manufacturers
- Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
- Design engineers
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS EN IEC 62148‑1 - Fibre optic active components and devices?
Fibre optic active components and devices are used to convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa. The optical performance criteria are generally well specified for a number of internationally agreed application areas, for example, consulting ITU-T Recommendations originating in Study Group 15, Networks, Technologies and Infrastructures for Transport, Access, and Home. Manufacturers using the standards are responsible for meeting the required performance and/or reliability and quality assurance under a recognized scheme. BS EN IEC 62148‑1 defines physical interfaces only, and no guarantee of performance is implied, nor should it be assumed. The optical interface shall be selected from those whose interchangeability is guaranteed by other IEC standards.
BS EN IEC 62148‑1 discusses various types of interfaces between components and devices which include optical connector interfaces, pigtail interfaces, free-space optical coupling interfaces, electrical connector interfaces, non-connector type interfaces, the numbering of electrical terminals and electrical terminal assignment. Using BS EN IEC 62148‑1 you can assure interchangeability in physical interfaces between fibre optic active components and devices.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 62148‑1:2018 supersedes BS EN 62148‑1:2002. BS EN IEC 62148‑1:2018 includes a technical change with respect to BS EN 62148‑1:2002:
- Addition of a free space optical coupling interface in Clause 5
