What is BS EN IEC 62439‑5 - Beacon Redundancy Protocol (BRP) about?
BS EN IEC 62439‑5 is the fifth part of the IEC 62439 that discusses high availability automation networks in industrial communication networks.
BS EN IEC 62439‑5 specifies a redundancy protocol that is based on the duplication of the network, the redundancy protocol being executed within the end nodes, as opposed to a redundancy protocol built in the switches. Fast error detection is provided by two beacon nodes, the switchover decision is taken in every node individually. The cross-network connection capability enables singly attached end nodes to be connected on either of the two networks.
Who is BS EN IEC 62439‑5 - Beacon Redundancy Protocol (BRP) for?
BS EN IEC 62439‑5 on beacon redundancy protocol (BRP) is useful for:
- Any organization with an independent communication network
- IT expert teams
Why should you use BS EN IEC 62439‑5 - Beacon Redundancy Protocol (BRP)?
Industrial communication networks are used in control systems to transfer data between field devices and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), between PLCs or between PLCs and personal computers. These networks need to be operational at all times as a failure in the network might result in loss of vital data.
BS EN IEC 62439‑5 provides you guidance on BRP by giving you a detailed account of its specifications like MAC address, Ether Type, fault detection mechanism, BRP end devices etc. These specifications help you to understand the application of BRP better, and enable you to efficiently implement it in your industrial communication network.
Overall, the guidelines of BS EN IEC 62439‑5 enable you to achieve a seamless ethernet connection between the devices of your organization by incorporating BPR which maintains connectivity even in case of single-point failure.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 62439‑5:2018 replaces IEC 62439‑5:2010. BS EN IEC 62439‑5:2018 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 62439‑5:2010:
- The protocol is now independent of application (Path_Check_Request is sent periodically)
- Failure Notify message has been removed
- Frame format had been changed
- New MAC address had been added
