What is BS EN IEC 62485‑4 – Secondary batteries and battery installations about?
BS EN IEC 62485‑4 is an international standard that discusses value-regulated lead-acid batteries for secondary batteries and battery installations.
BS EN IEC 62485‑4 applies to the safety aspects associated with the accommodation, the arrangements of circuits and the operation of secondary valve-regulated lead-acid cells and batteries in portable appliances.
Requirements are specified which oblige the manufacturers of appliances and secondary batteries to prevent the misuse of batteries in the course of operation to provide protective measures avoiding injury to persons in case of battery failure and to provide sufficient information to users.
NOTE: BS EN IEC 62485‑4 does not apply to secondary cells and batteries alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes.
Who is BS EN IEC 62485‑4 – Secondary batteries and battery installations for?
BS EN IEC 62485‑4 on secondary batteries and battery installation applies to:
- Manufacturers of batteries and fuel cells
- Quality testing personnel
- Manufacturers of rechargeable battery
- Electric engineer
Why should you use BS EN IEC 62485‑4 – Secondary batteries and battery installations?
The storage battery, secondary battery, or charge accumulator is a cell or combination of cells in which the cell reactions are reversible. This means that the original chemical conditions within the cell can be restored by passing current to flow into it: that is, by charging from an external source.
BS EN IEC 62485‑4 provides guidance about the safety and health protection of persons when using valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, which are used as DC power supply systems in portable appliances. Therefore BS EN IEC 62485‑4 applies to commercially available valve-regulated lead-acid batteries and battery systems.
BS EN IEC 62485‑4 showcases electrical safety protection against incorrect polarity connection and design of battery and battery compartments. It provides safe handling during transport, installation and replacement of the battery, its terminals and the connecting cables is be designed so that short circuits are prevented.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 62485‑4:2018 supersedes BS EN 50272‑4:2007, which is withdrawn. It includes:
- Updating of the requirements, and harmonisation of the text for consistency with the IEC 62485 series.
