What is BS EN IEC 63115‑2 about?
BS EN IEC 63115‑2 is a multi-part series of European standard which specifies designations, tests and requirements for the safe operation of sealed nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries used in industrial applications excluding road vehicles.
BS EN IEC 63115‑2 covers batteries for various industrial applications, it includes those requirements which are common and minimum to the various applications.
Who is BS EN IEC 63115‑2 for?
BS EN IEC 63115‑2 on sealed nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries for use in industrial applications is applicable to:
- Manufacturing secondary cells and batteries
- Companies dealing with sealed nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries
- Suppliers and distributors for cells and batteries
- Industries using nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries
Why should you use BS EN IEC 63115‑2?
Nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries have several benefits which make them best suited for different industrial applications. These batteries offer advantages such as- environmental acceptability, design flexibility, low maintenance, high power and energy densities and most importantly safety. Nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries are better alternatives for Li-ion batteries, due to higher safety compared to the latter.
As a user of BS EN IEC 63115‑2, you can ensure safe operation of sealed nickel-metal hydride batteries. It allows you to insulate between the positive terminal and externally exposed electrically active surfaces of the battery which provides protection against shock hazard.
By use, and particularly abuse of cells or batteries it leads to hazards and can cause harm. BS EN IEC 63115‑2 provides the guidance on how to mitigate hazards to equipment manufactures and in case of direct sale to end users. It gives information about current, voltage and temperature limits, which helps in manufacturing nickel-metal hydride cells and batteries for secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes in a standardized manner.
