What is ISO 11127‑2 about?
ISO 11127‑2 is the second part of the ISO 11127 multi-series, and discusses steel substrates. ISO 11127‑2 specifies a test method for determining the particle size distribution of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives by sieving.
ISO 11127‑2 deals with the sampling and testing of non-metallic abrasives for blast cleaning.
Note 1: The types of non-metallic abrasives and requirements for each are contained in the ISO 11126 series.
Note 2: The ISO 11126 and ISO 11127 series have been drafted as a coherent set of International Standards on non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives.
Who is ISO 11127‑2 for?
ISO 11127‑2 on steel substrate preparation before paint application is useful for:
- The automotive industry
- Steel furniture manufacturers
- Steel toy manufacturers
- Steel utensil manufacturers
- Paint Manufacturers
- Manufacturers of abrasives
- Painters
Why should you use ISO 11127‑2?
Steel substrates need to be prepared before painting so that adhesion is strong. Steel substrate preparation involves removing impurities from the surface. In this case, the method for cleaning the substrate involves the use of abrasives. The particle size distribution of the abrasive matters because that defines its uses. Abrasives with large particle sizes are used for removing existing coatings, and those with small particle sizes are meant for removing corrosion.
ISO 11127‑2 provides you with a test method to determine the particle size distribution by sieving. ISO 11127‑2 guides you through the test procedure to determine the appropriate application of abrasives as per their particle size.
ISO 11127‑2 guides you to get a clean surface before paint application.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 11127‑2:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 11127‑2:2011, which is withdrawn BS EN ISO 11127‑2:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 11127‑2:2011. These include:
- The use of a sample divider or riffler has been introduced in Clause 6
- Annex A has been updated.
