What is ISO 11127‑5 about?
Steel substrates need to be cleaned thoroughly before painting to ensure strong adhesion. One way to prepare steel substrates is to use abrasives for blast-cleaning. These abrasives need to be free of moisture.
ISO 11127‑5 deals with the sampling and testing of non-metallic abrasives for blast cleaning. ISO 11127‑5 specifies a method for the determination of the level of free moisture present in non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. It is determined by measuring the mass lost on heating.
Note 1: The types of non-metallic abrasives and requirements for each are contained in the ISO 11126 series.
Note: The ISO 11126 and ISO 11127 series have been drafted as a coherent set of International Standards on non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. Information on all parts of both series is given in Annex A.
Who is ISO 11127‑5 for?
ISO 11127‑5 on steel substrate preparation before application of paints is useful for:
- The automotive industry
- Steel furniture manufacturers
- Steel toy manufacturers
- Steel utensil manufacturers
- Paint Manufacturers
- Manufacturers of abrasives
- Painters
Why should you use ISO 11127‑5?
Moisture content in abrasives can directly affect the performance of steel substrate preparation. High moisture content in abrasives can also lead to failure in blasting equipment.
ISO 11127‑5 provides you with a test procedure to determine the level of moisture on the surface. ISO 11127‑5 helps you to determine the moisture content in abrasives. This will help you to maintain the integrity of your abrasive blasting equipment.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 11127‑5:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 11127‑5:2011, which is withdrawn BS EN ISO 11127‑5:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 11127‑5:2011. These include:
- Clause 3 has been added
- Subclause 6.2 has been technically revised; the sample is agitated to increase the surface area and improve the drying process
- Annex A has been updated.
