What is ISO 11357‑8 about?
ISO 11357‑8 is the eighth part in the multi-series of ISO 11357. ISO 11357‑8 establishes a method for the determination of the thermal conductivity of solid unfilled and filled or fibre reinforced plastics and composites by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
ISO 11357‑8 is applicable for materials with thermal conductivities of up to 1 W/(m⋅K).
Who is ISO 11357‑8 for?
ISO 11357‑8 on the determination of thermal conductivity on plastic by DSC is applicable to:
- Plastic producers
- Plastic testing institution
Why should you use ISO 11357‑8?
DSC is a thermo-analytical technique, in which the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a sample and reference is measured as a function of temperature. ISO 11357‑8 involves the DSC method to determine thermal conductivity on plastic.
The advantage of using DSC for measuring the thermal conductivity of plastics is that with the same instrument also the specific heat capacity can be obtained. This enables the determination of the thermal diffusivity by dividing the thermal conductivity by the density and specific heat capacity.
ISO 11357‑8 determines the thermal conductivity in plastic which helps prevent heat transmission and has proven to offer cooling performance comparable to that of metal.
ISO 11357-8 takes you through the required apparatus and substances, specimens, measurement procedure and calculation of thermal conductivity to accurately conduct physical testing of plastics.
As a manufacturer, you will be able to evaluate the response of plastics and polymer to heating, helping you make an improved choice regarding the components that go into your products. In order to produce high-quality and durable products, ISO 11357-8 can be your one-stop guide.
