What is ISO 11463 - Guidelines for the evaluation of pitting corrosion about?
ISO 11463 gives guidelines for the selection of procedures that can be used in the identification and examination of corrosion pits and in the evaluation of pitting corrosion and pit growth rate.
A visual examination of the corroded metal surface with or without the use of a low-power magnifying glass may be used to determine the extent of corrosion and the apparent location of pits.
Who is ISO 11463- Guidelines for the evaluation of pitting corrosion for?
ISO 11463 on the guidelines for the evaluation of pitting corrosion is relevant to:
- Corrosion engineers
- Mechanical engineers
- Producers of bimetallic materials
- Testing authorities
Why should you use ISO 11463 - Guidelines for the evaluation of pitting corrosion?
Corrosion pits act as the precursor to other damage modes such as stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue.
It is important to determine the extent of pitting and its characteristics, either in a service application, where it is necessary to estimate the remaining life in a metal structure or in laboratory test programmes that are used to select pitting-resistant materials for a particular service. ISO 11463 determines the minimum pit size to be evaluated and whether total area covered, average pit depth, maximum pit depth or another criterion is the most important to measure. ISO 11463 provides several sophisticated ex-situ techniques which are available for examining the size, shape, and distribution of pits in metallic samples. Their application involves the transport of the specimens to a laboratory or dedicated analytical facility.
Overall, ISO 11463 is helpful as it assists the user in examining the cleaned metal surface to determine the approximate size and distribution of pits.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 11463:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 11463:2008, which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 11463:2020 replaces the first edition (ISO 11463:1995), which has been technically revised. The main changes compared with the previous edition are as follows:
- Modern surface analysis and characterization techniques for ex situ examination have been included
