What is this standard about?
This international standard specifies acceptance levels for full penetration ultrasonic non-destructive testing of welded joints in ferritic steels.
Who is this standard for?
- Manufacturers of welded joints
- Suppliers of welded joints
- Professionals responsible for acceptance inspections
- Quality assessors
- Regulatory bodies
The following industries are the most likely to use this standard:
- Oil and gas
- Power
- Aerospace
- Engineering and fabrication
- Automotive
- Rail
- Shipbuilding
- Defence
- Off highway
- Electronics
- Medical
- Equipment, consumables and materials
- Nuclear
- Structural steel and construction
Why should you use this standard?
It specifies ultrasonic acceptance levels 2 and 3 for full penetration welded joints in ferritic steels, which correspond to ISO 5817 quality levels B and C and applies to welds 8 mm to 100 mm thick.
The standard can also be used for other types of welds, materials and thicknesses, as long as examinations take the geometry and acoustic properties of the component into account, and an adequate sensitivity can be employed to enable the acceptance levels of this international standard to be applied.
The nominal frequency of probes used in this standard is between 2 MHz and 5 MHz unless attenuation or requirements for higher resolution call for other frequencies. Give careful consideration to using these acceptance levels in conjunction with frequencies outside this range.
NOTE 1: An acceptance level corresponding to ISO 5817 quality level D is not included because ultrasonic testing is generally not requested for this weld quality.
NOTE 2: These acceptance levels apply to testing carried out in accordance with ISO 17640.
