What is ISO 12460-3 - Wood-based panels with gas analysis method about?
ISO 12460-3 is the third part of the ISO 12460 series of documents that specifies a procedure for the determination of accelerated formaldehyde release from uncoated and coated wood-based panels using the gas analysis method.
The procedure is also suitable for the testing of other materials (e.g., edge bands, floor coverings, foams, foils, laminated wood products, veneered wood products, coated wood products).
Who is ISO 12460-3 - Wood-based panels with gas analysis method for?
ISO 12460-3 on determining the formaldehyde release of wood-based panels is beneficial for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of wood or wood-based materials
- Manufacturers who use preservatives
- Research industries
- Forest management
- Solid wood processors
Why should you use ISO 12460-3 - Wood-based panels with gas analysis method?
Wood panels have a natural resistance to certain chemicals and may be treated for enhanced resistance to a wide range of substances.
ISO 12460-3 assists the user in determining formaldehyde concentration photometrically or fluorometrically. The formaldehyde release is calculated from this concentration, the sampling time, and the exposed area of the test pieces and is expressed in milligrams per square meter and hour.
Overall, ISO 12460-3 is beneficial as it provides different types of procedures and principles which can be of good help.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 12460-3:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 12460-3:2015, which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 12460-3:2020 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 12460-3:2015), which has been technically revised in order to improve the detection limit and the reproducibility of the method with regard to boards with low formaldehyde content.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- The test period can be reduced from 4 h to 3 h
- Four different options to determine the formaldehyde release are introduced
- Conditioning procedure for decor finish foils.
