What is ISO 12956 about?
ISO 12956 specifies a method for the determination of the characteristic size of the openings of a single layer of a geotextile or geotextile-related product using the wet-sieving principle.
Who is ISO 12956 for?
ISO 12956 on a geotextile-related product is useful for:
- Builders
- Civil engineers
- Road contractors
- Manufacturers of geotextile or geotextile-related product
Why should you use ISO 12956?
Geotextiles are thin and strong membrane fabric that is used to reinforce soil & prevent damage. ISO 12956 provides a test method to determine the opening size of a single layer of a geotextile or geotextile-related product which corresponds to the specified size of the granular material passed.
ISO 12956 provides requirements on the sieving apparatus and materials used to determine properties of geotextile products.
ISO 12956 gives information regarding the water supply system to avoid soil or granular material loss from geotextile products and the procedure to calculate the dry mass of initial granular material, of passed and retained granular material and the percentage lost and passed granular material.
Furthermore, ISO 12956 let you manufacture geotextiles and geotextiles products allowing water from soft natural soil to pass into a free-draining construction soil, which allows the natural soil to consolidate, thereby gaining strength and providing a more suitable surface for foundations and in building construction to fill gaps capable of providing strength and stability to the construction.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 12956:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 12956:2010. BS EN ISO 12956:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 12956:2010.
These include:
- The average used in order to select the number of specimens is modified (25 % to 15 %)
- Explanations are given for the preparation of knitted tubular geotextiles.
