What is ISO 13365‑2 about?
ISO 13365 is a series on leathers. Leather is a strong, flexible and durable material obtained from the tanning, or chemical treatment, of animal skins and hides to prevent decay.  ISO 13365‑2 specifies a test method by artificial perspiration solution aqueous extraction for the determination of the aqueous extractable content of the following preservative agents in leather by liquid chromatography:
- 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB)
- 4-chloro-3-methyl phenol (PCMC)
- 2-phenyl phenol (OPP)
- 2-octylisothiazol-3(2H)-one (OIT)
ISO 13365‑2 can also be used to determine breakdown products of these preservative agents, which protect the leather from microbiological attacks.
Who is ISO 13365‑2 for?
ISO 13365‑2 on the chemical determination of the preservative in leather is useful for:
- Leather manufacturing industries
- Leather testing institution
- Quality control personnel
- Research and development facilities
Why should you use ISO 13365‑2?
Leather can be used to make a variety of items, including clothing, footwear, handbags, furniture, tools, and sports equipment, and lasts for decades. Liquid chromatography (LC) is an analytical chromatographic technique that is useful for separating ions or molecules that are dissolved in a solvent. The Artificial Eccrine Perspiration is the closest mimic to true human eccrine sweat. ISO 13365‑2 provides the required guidance on determining the method of chemical determination of preservatives in leather.
When we wear full-length clothes in summer it leads to sweat and some chemicals which can involve the leather in high content can harm the skin so for the comfort of the end-users. It is necessary for determining the chemical from the product and making the good best for performing best in the market and increase the profitability of the product. Using ISO 13365‑2 you can specify a test method by artificial perspiration solution aqueous extraction for the determination of the aqueous extractable content.
What is changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 13365‑2:2020 supersedes ISO 13365:2011. BS EN ISO 13365‑2:2020 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to ISO 13365:2011. These include:
- The title has been changed to indicate the method of extraction
- The use of HPLC with mass spectrometric (MS) detection has been included
- Reagents have been technically modified.
- The chromatographic conditions are now included in a new annexe also include additional conditions for use with MS detection.
