What is ISO 13606-2 about?
ISO 13606 is a multipart series, discusses standards for electronic health record communication. ISO 13606-2 is an international standard that specifies information architecture for interoperable communications between electronic health record systems and services that need or provide electronic health record (EHR) data.
ISO 13606-2 specifies the requirements for a comprehensive and interoperable archetype representation and defines the Open Distributed Processing (ODP) information viewpoint representation for the Archetype Object Model.
The components that support an interface conforming to ISO 13606-2 are electronic health record systems and also other services such as security components, guidelines and workflow systems, alerting and decision support services, personal health systems and applications, sensors and wearable devices, and medical knowledge management services.
NOTE: ISO 13606-2 is not intended to specify the internal architecture or database design of EHR systems.
Who is ISO 13606-2 for?
ISO 13606-2 on electronic health record communication is useful for:
- Manufacturers of EHR systems
- Research and development team
- Healthcare professional
- Healthcare industries
- Healthcare service providers
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use ISO 13606-2?
Electronic health record is used for purposes such as teaching, clinical audit, administration and reporting, service management, research and epidemiology. ISO 13606-2 is used to support the direct care given to identifiable individuals or self-care by individuals themselves, or to support population monitoring systems such as disease registries and public health surveillance.
ISO 13606-2 provides you with an Archetype Model to be used to represent Archetypes when communicated between repositories, and between archetype services. It defines an optional serialized representation, which may be used as an exchange format for communicating individual archetypes. Such communication might be between archetype libraries or between an archetype service and an EHR persistence or validation service.
Archetype Model specified in ISO 13606-2 is the meta-data used to define patterns for the specific characteristics of the clinical data that represent the requirements of each particular profession, service.
