What is ISO 13606-3 about?
ISO 13606 is a multipart series, discusses standards for electronic health record communication. ISO 13606-3 is an international standard that specifies information architecture for interoperable communications between electronic health record systems and services that need or provide electronic health record (EHR) data.
ISO 13606-3 defines term lists that each specify the set of values for the particular attributes of the Reference Model which is defined in ISO 13606-1. ISO 13606-3 also defines normative and informative Reference Archetypes that enable frequently-occurring instances of EHR data to be represented within a consistent structure when communicated using this document.
ISO 13606-3 is used for Electronic Health Record (EHR) communication between an EHR system or repository and clinical applications or middleware components (such as decision support components) that need to access or provide EHR data.
NOTE: ISO 13606-3 is not intended to specify the internal architecture or database design of EHR systems.
Who is ISO 13606-3 for?
ISO 13606-3 on electronic health record communication is useful for:
- Manufacturers of EHR systems
- Research and development team
- Healthcare professional
- Healthcare industries
- Healthcare service providers
- Regulatory bodies
Why should you use ISO 13606-3?
Electronic health record (EHR) is used for purposes such as teaching, clinical audit, administration and reporting, service management, research and epidemiology. ISO 13606-3 used to support the direct care given to identifiable individuals or self-care by individuals themselves, or to support population monitoring systems such as disease registries and public health surveillance.
ISO 13606-3 provides you with term list. A normative set of (coded) term lists that each defines a controlled vocabulary for a Reference Model attribute that is defined in ISO 13606‑1.
ISO 13606-3 provides you with Reference Archetypes known as a clinical model, used to shape parts of an EHR extract, in order to provide predictability of the way in which clinical information is represented within it. A set of Reference Archetypes that specify how the ISO 13606‑1 reference model should be applied for communicating information for null flavor, access policies, demographic entities, example clinical reference archetypes.
ISO 13606-3 is useful for communicating data about individuals between electronic health record systems and population registries, and also for conducting research using electronic health records.
