BS EN ISO 13850:2015

What is this standard about?

There should always be an emergency stop button on machinery for safety. This standard covers the functional requirements and design principles for the stop function on most forms of machinery.

Who is this standard for?

• Machine manufacturers
• Anyone who refurbishes or modifies machines
• Control system designers
• Approval and enforcement bodies
• Manufacturers and resellers of emergency stop system components

Why should you use this standard?

It takes into account the requirements of the European Machinery Directive, and is applicable irrespective of the type of energy used to perform the stop function.

NOTE: This standard does not apply to hand-held or hand-operated machines, or those where an emergency stop would not reduce the risk; nor does it deal with functions such as reversal or limitation of motion, deflection, shielding, braking or disconnecting.

What’s changed since the last update?

The standard was revised to update normative references. Users will benefit from:

• Increased confidence in the performance of emergency stops
• Reduced differences between machines made in different countries
