What is ISO 14501 about?
ISO 14501 discusses milk and milk powders. This international standard aims to improve the quality and safety of dairy products by eliminating the risk of mycotoxins. ISO 14501 specifies a method for the determination of aflatoxin M1 content in milk and milk powder. The lowest level of validation is 0,08 microgram/kg for whole milk powder, i.e. 0,008 microgram/l for reconstituted liquid milk. The limit of detection (LOD) is 0,05 microgram/kg for milk powder and 0,005 microgram/kg for liquid milk. The limit of quantification (LOQ) is 0,1 microgram/kg for milk powder and 0,01 microgram/kg for liquid milk.
The method specified by ISO 14501 is also applicable to low-fat milk, skimmed milk, low-fat milk powder and skimmed milk powder.
Who is ISO 14501 for?
ISO 14501 on the determination of aflatoxin in milk and milk powder is useful for:
- Dairy producers
- Food scientists
- Food laboratories
- Food analysers
Why should you use ISO 14501?
Aflatoxin M1 have been reported to cause digestive system effects such as diarrhoea, vomiting, intestinal haemorrhage, and liver necrosis and fibrosis.
ISO 14501 specifies methods to determine the toxic substances in milk and milk powder. The method used by ISO 14501 provides high selectivity, resolution, and capacity in protein purification of milk products. The high-performance liquid chromatographic testing given in ISO 14501 can be modified depending on the level of quantification needed, and it produces reliable results.
ISO 14501 enables you to analyze milk and milk powder to determine aflatoxin M1 content using only a small amount of test samples. This can help you to produce high-quality milk products free from contamination
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 14501:2021 supersedes ISO 14501|IDF 171:2007. BS EN ISO 14501:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 14501|IDF 171:2007. These include:
- The lack of detailed explanation in some clauses was leading to variability in the way the method was executed from one laboratory to another. Practical information from skilled end users familiar with routine analysis using this protocol was taken into account in this revision to clarify those ambiguous clauses
