What is ISO 14557 about?
ISO 14557 discusses about Fire-fighting hoses. ISO 14557 establishes the requirements and test methods for rubber and plastics suction hoses for fire-fighting purposes. These hoses can also be used manually to supply unpressurized water to the pump or for water discharge.
ISO 14557 specifies additional requirements such as visual examinations, adhesion, frequency of testing, marking, classification etc. for hose assemblies and hoses with couplings already fitted.
NOTE 1: Clause 8 gives additional requirements which are specified for hose assemblies, that is, hoses with couplings already fitted, where this is carried out by the hose manufacturer..
NOTE 2: Type A (rubber) hoses are intended for use at a minimum temperature of −20 °C and Type B (thermoplastics) hoses are intended for use at a minimum temperature of −10 °C.
NOTE 3: All pressures are expressed in megapascals and in bar (1 MPa = 10 bar).
Who is ISO 14557 for?
ISO 14557 on fire-fighting hoses are useful for:
- Rubber and plastic hoses manufacturers and suppliers
- PVC hose pipe manufacturers and suppliers
- Entities dealing plastic hose assembly and hoses
- Test providers for plastic and rubber hoses and hose assemblies
Why should you use ISO 14557?
A fire hose is a very high-pressure hose that is used to take water or any fire blocking element to the fire, in order to extinguish it.
ISO 14557 provides you with particular requirements, test procedures along with different types of tests, visual examinations and additional information about marking and frequency of testing for rubber and plastics suction hoses, which helps you in the production of reliable, efficient and defect-free hoses for fire-fighting purposes.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 14557:2021 supersedes EN ISO 14557:2002, which is withdrawn. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Pressure units in bar were added throughout the document, as needed
- Clause 2 (Normative references) was updated
- UV resistance requirement was added in 6.7
- Clause 7 on frequency of testing was added and all subsequent clauses were renumbered
- Annexes A and B were added and all subsequent annexes were renumbered
