What is BS EN ISO 14644-4 – Cleanroom design and construction about?
The fourth in a multipart international standard, BS EN ISO 14644-4 describes best practice requirements during the design, construction, commissioning, start up, and hand over of a cleanroom or cleaner device installation from the supplier to the customer and end user.
Who is BS EN ISO 14644-4 - Cleanroom design and construction for?
Users, specifiers, designers, purchasers, suppliers, builders and performance verifiers of cleanroom installations.
What does BS EN ISO 14644-4 - Cleanroom design and construction cover?
BS EN ISO 14644-4 specifies the process for creating a cleanroom from requirements through to its design, construction and start-up. It applies to new and refurbished or modified cleanroom installations.
The primary cleanliness consideration in BS EN ISO 14644-4 is airborne particle concentration. Detailed checklists are provided for the various stages including requirements, design, construction and start-up, which include important performance parameters to be considered.
Energy management design approaches are identified to support an energy efficient cleanroom design. Construction guidance is provided including requirements for start-up and verification. A basic element of this standard is consideration of aspects including maintenance that will ensure continued satisfactory operation for the entire lifecycle of the cleanroom.
Why should you use BS EN ISO 14644-4 - Cleanroom design and construction?
- BS EN ISO 14644-4 provides a chronologically logical progression through the steps of a typical procurement project that can be applied to a new installation, refurbishment or upgrading
- It includes substantial informative guidance to amplify the normative parts and illustrate best practice approaches
- It forms an extremely useful basis for end users and cleanroom and clean air device purchasers to use as a basis for defining best practices required from their designers and constructors
- This revision contains very up-to-date principles and concepts, particularly related to energy saving, while remaining practical and achievable
- This standard can help users develop their expertise, as well as improve efficiency and risk management
BS EN ISO 14644-4 contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goal on industry, innovation and infrastructure.
What’s new about BS EN ISO 14644-4:2022?
This is an update of the very well-established BS EN ISO 14644-4:2001. The major changes in BS EN ISO 14644-4:2022 are:
- A much clearer explanation of a logical sequence of activities
- Improved clarity on how to use the standard for different scales and complexity of installations
- Some useful checklists on important matters to consider at each logical stage of a design and construction process
- Greater emphasis on the importance of clarity of requirements, described as the user requirement specification, and how compliance with these requirements should be tracked through the life cycle of the investment
- An improved linkage with the concepts of qualification and validation that might be found in the life science sector
- A significantly enhanced design section to provide clearer and more comprehensive guidance around contamination control concepts, with a particular reinforcement of modern energy conscious approaches to clean supply air quantification and distribution. There is a strong normative link to the sister standard in the series, Part 16 that covers energy saving in cleanrooms.
