What is ISO 15091 about?
ISO 15091 discusses paints and varnishes. ISO 15091 specifies a method for determining the electrical conductivity and the electrical resistance of coating materials. The conductivity is usually measured for water-borne paints and varnishes, including electrodeposition coating materials, and the resistance is usually measured for solvent-borne paints and varnishes.
If required, the resistivity of the coating material is calculated from either of these measurements. The method in ISO 15091 is applicable to products having a conductivity less than 5 μS/cm, corresponding to a resistivity greater than 200 kΩ⋅cm.
Who is ISO 15091 for?
ISO 15091 on paints and varnishes (determination of electrical conductivity and resistance) is useful for:
- Paint Manufacturers
- Research and development teams
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 15091?
The conductivity of coating materials influences their processibility in the presence of an electric field. This is particularly important for electrodeposition paints and coating materials which are processed electrostatically. ISO 15091 guides you with the measurement of the resistance and helps you with the avoidance of electrolysis and polarization effects.
ISO 15091 provides you with a test to assess the electrical conductivity or resistance in the coating materials. ISO 15091 helps you with understanding the level of electrical conductivity on your paint coatings, to prevent electronic discharge from your electrical applications.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 15091:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 15091:2012, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 15091:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 15091:2012. These include:
- The conductivity of the aqueous potassium chloride solution with a molality of 0,001 mol/kg has been corrected to 146,71 μS/cm to correct a mistake in conductivity
- The text has been editorially revised
