What is BS EN ISO 15118‑8- Vehicle to grid communication interface about?
BS EN ISO 15118‑8 is the eighth part of the multi-series standard that specifies the requirements of the physical and data link layer of a wireless High Level Communication (HLC) between Electric Vehicles (EV) and the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). The wireless communication technology is used as an alternative to the wired communication technology as defined in ISO 15118‑3.
BS EN ISO 15118‑8 covers the overall information exchange between all actors involved in the electrical energy exchange. ISO 15118 (all parts) are applicable for conductive charging as well as Wireless Power Transfer (WPT).
Note -
For conductive charging, only EVSEs compliant with “IEC 618511 modes 3 and 4” and supporting HLC are covered by this document. For WPT, charging sites according to IEC 61980 (all parts) and vehicles according to ISO/PAS 19363 are covered by this document.
Who is BS EN ISO 15118‑8- Vehicle to grid communication interface for?
BS EN ISO 15118‑8 on the physical layer and data link layer requirements for wireless communication of vehicle to grid communication interface is applicable to:
- Electric Vehicle Manufacturers
- Battery manufacturers and installers
- Vehicle Regulatory Authorities
- Electricity Grid manufacturers and installers
Why should you use BS EN ISO 15118‑8- Vehicle to grid communication interface?
The pending energy crisis and necessity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has led the vehicle manufacturers to a very significant effort to reduce the energy consumption of their vehicles.
BS EN ISO 15118‑8 provides physical layer and data link layer requirements for the optimized use of energy resources so that electric road vehicles can recharge in the most economic or most energy-efficient way. This helps the EV manufacturer in reduction of energy wastage.
The charging of electric vehicles requires a stable and reliable communication link. This is especially critical in the case of wireless communication. Any reduction of the quality of service, be it a decreased throughput, an increased latency or even an interruption or loss of connection could affect the charging process and thus lead to a negative user experience. BS EN ISO 15118‑8 gives requirements for the wireless communication module on both the EVCC and the SECC side. This helps you in improving communication and reducing energy wastage.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 15118‑8:2019 supersedes BS ISO 151188:2018, which is withdrawn.
