What is BS EN ISO 15148 - Water absorption coefficient of building materials and products about?
ISO 15148 is the international standard on the hygrothermal performance of building materials and products that allows the movement of heat and moisture through buildings.
ISO 15148 specifies a method for determining, by partial immersion with no temperature gradient, the short-term liquid water absorption coefficient.
ISO 15148 is intended to assess the rate of absorption of water, by capillary action from continuous or driving rain during on-site storage or construction, by insulating and other materials, which are normally protected.
The method is suitable for renders or coatings tested in conjunction with the substrate on which they are normally mounted.
Note: ISO 15148 is not intended to assess the absorption of water by materials used underwater or in overall contact with saturated ground, where a total immersion test is more appropriate.
Who is ISO 15148 - Water absorption coefficient of building materials and products for?
ISO 15148 on hygrothermal performance of building materials and products is useful for:
- Builders
- Architects
- Manufacturers and suppliers of construction materials
- Manufacturers of thermal insulating materials
Why should you use ISO 15148 - Water absorption coefficient of building materials and products?
The movement of moisture within hygroscopic capillary building materials is a combination of vapour and liquid flows which have complex interactions with the temperature and humidity gradients and the properties of the materials present.
The water absorption by partial immersion is determined by ISO 15148 by measuring the change in mass of the test specimen.
ISO 15148 provides test apparatus and test procedure to evaluate water absorption coefficient by partial immersion of building materials.
ISO 15148 specifies the test specimens of the material or product of regular shape and Dimensions with constant cross-section to ensure one-dimensional water flow.
The preparation, conditioning of test specimen and test procedure are set out in ISO 15148.
Calculation and expression of results outlined in ISO 15148 along with the accuracy of measurement.
Furthermore, ISO 15148 assists you in the production of building materials by measuring the absorption of liquid water into the material's surface, which provides an indicator of its liquid transport performance to prevent cracks and ensure the durability and strength of the materials.
As a result, a material's water absorption coefficient is one of the most essential hygrothermal material qualities that must be evaluated in order to define the overall moisture management approach.
