What is ISO 1516– Closed cup equilibrium method about?
ISO 1516 focuses on test for petroleum and its products. The aim of the ISO 1516 is to provide best industry practices to demonstrate the flash point of petroleum and its products by closed cup equilibrium method.
ISO 1516 specifies a method to determine if paints, varnishes, paint binders, solvents, petroleum or related products, when maintained at a selected equilibrium temperature and under the conditions of the test, give off sufficient flammable vapour to cause ignition on application of an external source of flame applied in a standard manner. The method is suitable for use over the temperature range – 30 °C to 110 °C, depending on the use of different apparatus. The interpretation of results obtained from solvent mixtures containing halogenated hydrocarbons should be considered with caution, as these mixtures can give anomalous results.
Note: ISO 1516 is not applicable to water-borne paints which may, however, be tested.
Who is ISO 1516 - Closed cup equilibrium method for?
ISO 1516 on closed cup equilibrium method is useful for:
- Petroleum and its products manufacturers and suppliers
- Paints and varnishes manufacturers and suppliers
- Transport department
- Quality control department
Why should you use ISO 1516 - Closed cup equilibrium method?
Petroleum and its products are volatile in nature therefore its storage and transport require specific precautions. The flash point is a safety-related characteristic that helps in determining the minimum temperature at ambient pressure at which a vapor-air mixture caigniteed in a closed space. ISO 1516 provides a test method that describes one of two closed cup equilibrium methods for carrying out a flash/no flash test for paints, varnishes, petroleum, and related products. This helps in understanding the behavior of petroleum and its products at the selected equilibrium temperature as may be required to comply with laws or regulations relating to the storage, transport, and use of flammable products.
