What is ISO 1523 – Closed cup equilibrium method about?
ISO 1523 focuses on test for petroleum and its products. The aim of the ISO 1523 is to provide best industry practices to demonstrate the flash point of petroleum and its products by closed cup equilibrium method.
ISO 1523 specifies a method to determine the flash point of paints, varnishes, paint binders, solvents, petroleum or related products. The method is suitable for use over the temperature range – 30 °C to 110 °C, depending on the use of different apparatus. The interpretation of results obtained from solvent mixtures containing halogenated hydrocarbons should be considered with caution, as these mixtures can give anomalous results.
Note: ISO 1516 is not applicable to water-borne paints which may, however, be tested.
Who is ISO 1523 - Closed cup equilibrium method for?
ISO 1523 on closed cup equilibrium method is useful for:
- Petroleum and its products manufacturers and suppliers
- Paints and varnishes manufacturers and suppliers
- Transport department
- Quality control and regulatory bodies
Why should you use ISO 1523 - Closed cup equilibrium method?
Petroleum and its products are volatile and flammable in nature therefore it requires specific precautions. The flash point is a safety-related characteristic that helps in determining the minimum temperature at ambient pressure at which a vapor-air mixture can ignite in a closed space. ISO 1523 provides a test method that describes one of two closed cup equilibrium methods for carrying out a flash/no flash test for paints, varnishes, petroleum and related products. This helps in understanding the behavior of petroleum and its products at the selected equilibrium temperature as may be required to comply with laws or regulations relating to the storage, transport and to check if the products are adulterated.
