What is ISO 16181-1 about?
ISO 16181-1 is the first part of the multi-series ISO 16181. ISO 16181-1 specifies a test method to determine the qualitative and quantitative presence of phthalate compounds in footwear and footwear components.
NOTE-ISO 16181-1 involves hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. It does not purport to address all the safety or environmental problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of users of this document to respond appropriately to ensure the safety and health of personnel and the environment prior to the application of ISO 16181-1 and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations for this purpose.
Who is ISO 16181-1 for?
ISO 16181-1 on the determination of phthalate with solvent extraction on footwear is useful for:
- Footwear manufacturing industries
- Footwear testing facilities
- Designers of footwear
Why should you use ISO 16181-1?
Footwear is wearing apparel (such as shoes or boots) for the feet. Phthalates are important concerns for plastic and rubber footwear. Phthalates or phthalate esters are a group of chemical compounds that are used as plasticizers to increase the flexibility of plastic. Colourless, odourless high phthalates are used in a multitude of products that demand high performance, long-lasting wear, and durability.
ISO 16181—1 specifies a test method to determine the qualitative and quantitative presence of phthalate compounds in footwear and footwear components.
ISO 16181-1 helps you to know the correct quantity of phthalate compounds in footwear, as the correct amount of phthalate compounds can determine the flexibility, high-performance, and durability of the footwear.
As for durability, flexibility, and high performance can impact the demand for the product and the sales and profitability of the company, so it is necessary that the products must be of the best durability, flexibility, and high performance.
What is changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 16181-1:2021 supersedes ISO/TS 16181:2011. BS EN ISO 16181-1:2021includes some technical changes with respect to ISO/TS 16181:2011. These include:
- Addition of several phthalates from 7 to 26
- Addition of Expression of results
- Addition of Results of the inter-laboratory tests – Method using toluene extraction
- Addition of new normative references and Terms and definitions and renumbering of subsequent clauses
- Splitting of former terms and definitions into reagents and apparatus with technical modification
- Technical revision of Principle and Reagents
- Deletion of Extraction solution with internal standard (optional)
- Replacement of “n-hexane/acetone” with “toluene” and alternative “tetrahydrofuran” as extraction solution
