What is ISO 16189 about?
ISO 16189 specifies a method to determine the amounts of dimethylformamide (DMF) in footwear and footwear components containing polyurethane (PU) coated material.
NOTE 1- In the footwear industry, when PU is injected (reaction moulded), this process does not require the use of DMF. For PU-coated material, the use of DMF is possible.
Who is ISO 16189 for?
ISO 16189 on critical substances potentially present in footwear and footwear components-test method to quantitatively determine dimethylformamide in footwear materials are applicable to:
- Footwear manufactures
- Chemical laboratories
- Footwear material suppliers
Why should you use ISO 16189?
DMF is a colorless, fishy-smelling liquid that is miscible with water and many other organic solvents. It is a solvent commonly used in the production of polyurethane-coated materials such as synthetic leather. It can also be used to process coatings, adhesives, plastics, acrylic fibers, PU resins, or as a cleaning solvent. ISO 16189 helps you determine dimethylformamide in footwear materials.
By determining dimethylformamide from footwear materials, it can help to improve the quality of footwear to check if the footwear is in good condition, comfortable and safe. ISO 16189 helps you to improve the quality of the footwear in terms of safety.
What’s changed since the last update?
