What is ISO 1628-1 about?
ISO 1628-1 is the first part of the multi-series ISO 1628. ISO 1628-1. ISO 1628-1 defines the general conditions for the determination of the reduced viscosity, intrinsic viscosity, and K‑value of organic polymers in dilute solution. ISO 1628-1 defines the standard parameters that are applied to viscosity measurement.
ISO 1628-1 is used to develop standards for measuring the viscosities in a solution of individual types of polymers. It is also used to measure and report the viscosities of polymers in solution for which nose pirate standards exist.
ISO 1628-1 helps you determine the viscosity of polymers in dilute solution using capillary viscometers.
Who is ISO 1628-1 for?
ISO 1628-1 on general principles of viscosity of polymers in dilute solution using capillary viscometers is useful for:
- Polymers manufacturer
- Polymers testing institutions
Why should you use ISO 1628-1?
The measurement of the viscosity of polymer solutions in organic solvents gives us a value that is directly related to the molecular mass of the polymer. In other words, the higher the viscosity, the higher the molecular weight, although the correlation is not direct. Viscosity is used as a measuring stick. ISO 1628-1 helps in the determination of the reduced viscosity, intrinsic viscosity, and K-value of organic polymers in dilute solution.
Gathering viscosity data on a material gives manufacturers the ability to predict how the material will behave in the real world. The resistance is offered by a fluid to flow freely.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 1628-1:2021 supersedes ISO 1628-1:2009. BS EN ISO 1628-1:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 1628-1:2009. These include:
- ISO 3205 (withdrawn) has been deleted
- The figure keys have been revised
- Nominal viscometer constant has been added
