What is ISO 17225-2 about?
ISO 17225-2 determines the fuel quality classes and specifications of graded wood pellets for non-industrial and industrial use. ISO 17225-2 covers only wood pellets produced from the following raw materials:
- Forest, plantation, and other virgin wood
- By-products and residues from the wood processing industry
- Chemically untreated used wood
Note 1: Thermally treated biomass pellets (e.g. torrefied pellets) are not included in ISO 17225- 2.
Note 2: Pellets produced according to ISO 17225-2 can be used in pellet stoves.
Who is ISO 17225-2 for?
ISO 17225-2 on Graded wood pellets is beneficial for:
- Biofuel engineers
- Biodiesel operators
- Biochemical engineers
- Research labs
- Biodiesel producers
- Manufacturers of wood pellets
Why should you use ISO 17225-2?
Wood pellets are the most common type of pellet fuel and are generally made from compacted sawdust and related industrial wastes from the milling of lumber, manufacture of wood products and furniture, and construction.
The objective of ISO 17225-2 is to provide the user with the unambiguous and clear classification principles for solid biofuels and to serve as a tool to enable efficient trading of biofuels and to enable good understanding between seller and buyer as well as a tool for communication with equipment manufacturers. ISO 17225-2 facilitates authority permission procedures and reporting.
ISO 17225-2 supports the use of graded wood pellets for residential, small commercial, and public buildings as well as industrial energy generation applications, which require classified pellet quality).
Overall, ISO 17225-2 is helpful as it assists with the fuel specifications and classes of graded wood pellets which can help you in your business.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 17225-2: 2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 172252:2014, which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 17225-2: 2021 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 172252:2014), which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Ash melting behavior as normative and threshold values for DT temperature added for Table 1
- Maximum value for bulk density added for Table 1
- Particle density and coarse pellet fines added as informative
