What is ISO 17638 about?
ISO 17638 specifies techniques for the detection of surface imperfections in welds in ferromagnetic materials, including the heat-affected zones, by means of magnetic particle testing.
These techniques are suitable for most welding processes and joint configurations. Variations in the basic techniques that will provide a higher or lower test sensitivity are described in Annex A.
Note: ISO 17638 does not specify acceptance levels of the indications. Further information on acceptance levels for indications may be found in ISO 23278 or in product or application standards.
Who is ISO 17638 for?
ISO 17638 on non-destructive testing magnetic particle testing is applicable to:
- Construction, automotive, mechanical Industries
- Inspection authorities in a number of sectors, including oil and gas, marine, general engineering
- Certification authorities
- Authorised training and qualification bodies responsible for ensuring that training and examinations are in accordance with this industry mandated standard
Why should you use ISO 17638?
Magnetic particle testing is a method used to test the presence of defects or damage in ferromagnetic materials. This helps to ensure that the materials used are undamaged and safe to use.
ISO 17638 provides you with techniques for the detection of surface imperfections in welds in ferromagnetic materials, including the heat-affected zones, by means of magnetic particle testing. This will, in turn, help you to improve the quality and durability of welded joints.
The techniques provided in ISO 17638 are applicable and suitable for most of the welding processes, ISO 17638 detection methods of surface imperfections in welds in ferromagnetic materials help you improve the efficiency of welding operations.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 17638:2016 supersedes BS EN ISO 17638:2009 which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 17638:2016 was revised to ensure that inspection results remain consistent and repeatable when applied to new processes, revised standard practices, newly developed equipment, and changes to materials and constituent components.
