What is ISO 17658 - Terminology for welding imperfections about?
ISO 17658 defines the terms of possible imperfections in oxyfuel flame cuts, laser beam cuts, and plasma cuts in metallic materials which are collected and grouped.
ISO 17658 only includes imperfections originating directly from oxyfuel gas, laser beam cuts, and plasma arc cutting.
Any adverse effects resulting from additional external stresses or strains are not considered. The type, shape and location of these imperfections are grouped together but conditions and causes of origin are not given.
Who is ISO 17658 - Terminology for welding imperfections for?
ISO 17658 on welding imperfections is relevant to:
- Construction, automotive, mechanical Industries
- Aerospace industry
- Shipbuilding industry
- Railroad construction industry
- Sheet metal industry
- Welders
- Fabricators
Why should you use ISO 17658 - Terminology for welding imperfections?
ISO 17658 has grouped imperfections as follows:
- Imperfections on cut edges
- Imperfections on cut faces
- Slag
- Cracks
- Other imperfections
With standardized terminology, ISO 17658 can improve defect detection capabilities within the industry. It can be particularly beneficial for product design engineers, to ultimately enhance performance and operational efficiency of the end-application.
Uniform and consistent usage of terminology across the industry supply chain is also useful in avoiding miscommunication and misinterpretation, which is crucial for the implementation of risk mitigation measures and prevent product failures.
