What is ISO 183312 about?
ISO 1833 discusses the quantitative chemical analysis of textiles. ISO 1833-12 is the 12th part of the multi-series ISO 1833 and discusses a mixture of acrylic, certain modacrylics, certain chlorofibres, certain elastane fibres with certain other fibres.
ISO 1833-12 specifies a method, using dimethylformamide, to determine the mass percentage of acrylic, modacrylic, chlorofibre, or elastane, after removal of non-fibrous matter, in textiles made of mixtures of acrylic, certain modacrylics, certain chlorofibres, certain elastane fibre with wool, animal hair, silk, cotton, viscose, cupro, modal, lyocell, polyamide, polyester, polypropylene, elastomultiester, elastolefin, melamine, polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent, polyacrylate or glass fibre.
Note: ISO 1833-12 does not apply to animal hair, wool, and silk dyed with chromium-based mordant dyes.
Who is ISO 1833-12 for?
ISO 1833-12 on quantitative chemical analysis of textile is useful for:
- Textile manufacturers
- Quality control personnel
- Testing laboratories
Why should you use ISO 1833-12?
Quantitative analysis is any method used for determining the amount of a chemical in a sample. The amount is always expressed as a number with appropriate units. An acid-base titration is an example of quantitative analysis. Acrylic fibre fabrics are made from a synthetic polymer called acrylonitrile. This type of fibre is produced by reacting certain petroleum or coal-based chemicals with a variety of monomers, which means that acrylic fabric is a fossil fuel-based fibre. ISO 1833-12 provides the required guidance on quantitative chemical analysis of a mixture of acrylic, certain modacrylics, certain chlorofibres, certain elastane fibres with certain other fibres and by using the dimethylformamide method. ISO 1833-12 includes the test procedures, apparatus, and calculation and expression of results.
Quantitative chemical analysis is beneficial for ensuring the chemical's safety, quality, productivity, control, consistency, among other factors that affect everyday life. ISO 1833-12 helps you to manufacture better quality, safe, and durable products. ISO 1833-12 also helps you to gain consumer confidence.
What is changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 1833-12:2020 supersedes ISO 1833-12:2019. BS EN ISO 1833-12:2020 includes some technical changes concerning ISO 1833-12:2019. These include:
- In scope some remaining fibre (polypropylene and polypropylene/polyamide bicomponent have been added
- In Calculation and expression of results a specific d factor for polyacrylate has been added
