What is ISO 1833-22 about ?
ISO 1833 is a series on textiles. A textile is a flexible material made by creating an interlocking bundle of yarns or threads, which are produced by spinning raw fibres (from either natural or synthetic sources) into long and twisted lengths. ISO 1833-22 specifies a method, using formic acid and zinc chloride, to determine the mass percentage of viscose or certain types of cupro or modal or lyocell, after removal of non-fibrous matter, in textiles made of mixtures of viscose or certain types of the cupro or modal or lyocell fibres with flax fibres.
Note: ISO 1833-22 is not applicable to mixtures in which the flax fibre has suffered extensive chemical degradation, nor when the viscose, cupro, modal, or lyocell fibre is rendered incompletely soluble by the presence of certain permanent finishes or reactive dyes that cannot be removed completely.
Who is ISO 1833-22 for ?
ISO 1833-22 on textiles is useful for:
- Textile manufacturing industries
- Textile testing institutions
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 1833-22 ?
Textiles are then formed by weaving, knitting, crocheting, knitting tatting, felting, bonding, or braiding these yarns together. ISO 1833-22 describes that after the removal of the non-cellulosic components (pectin, etc.) related to the flax fibre internal structure by means of pre-treatment with sodium hydroxide, the viscose, cupro or modal or lyocell fibre is dissolved out from a known dry mass of the mixture, with a reagent composed of formic acid and zinc chloride. The residue is collected, washed, dried, and weighed; its corrected mass is expressed as a percentage of the dry mass of the mixture. The mass percentage of viscose, cupro, modal, or lyocell fibre is found by difference.
By performing this test as described in ISO 1833-22, you get to know which textile fibre is good for use and comfortable for further processes. The best quality fibre will make the best quality final product for customers as the final product will decide the demand for the good as it is important for providing the best quality goods to the customers to maintain the best goodwill in the market. Using ISO 1833-22 you can specify a method to determine the mass percentage of viscose or certain types of cupro or modal or lyocell.
What is changed since the last update ?
BS EN ISO 1833-22:2021 supersedes ISO 1833-22:2013. BS EN ISO 1833-22:2021 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to ISO 1833-22:2013. These include:
- The title has been changed from “Mixtures of viscose or certain types of cupro or modal or lyocell and flax fibres (method using formic acid and zinc chloride)” to “Mixtures of viscose or certain types of cupro or modal or lyocell with flax fibres (method using formic acid and zinc chloride)”
- Terms and definitions have been added and subsequent clauses have been renumbered
- The sodium hydroxide solution has been removed
- Additional instruction in case of the use of zinc chloride other than fused anhydrous zinc chloride has been added
- The pre-treatment procedure has been replaced
