What is ISO 19014‑1- Functional safety of EMM about?
ISO 19014 is an International Standard that discusses functional safety of earth-moving machinery (EMM), with an aim to reduce occupational hazards and injuries while operating the machines and equipment.
ISO 19014‑1 is the first part of the multi-series that provides a methodology for the determination of performance levels required for EMM as defined in ISO 6165.
Note: Step 2 as shown in Annex A demonstrates the relationship between ISO 12100 and ISO 19014 as a complementary protective measure.
Note: ISO 19014 can also be used to assess the functional safety requirements of other off-road mobile machinery.
Note: A list of safety control systems is included in Annex D.
Note: Audible warnings are excluded from the requirements of diagnostic coverage.
Who is ISO 19014‑1- Functional safety of EMM for?
ISO 19014‑1 on functional safety of EMM is relevant to:
- Machine manufacturers
- Health and safety bodies
- Market surveillance authorities
- Accident prevention organizations
- Regulators
- Machine designers
Why should you use ISO 19014‑1- Functional safety of EMM?
Functional safety is a component of overall machine and machine control system safety that is dependent on the proper operation of the Safety-related Control System (SCS) and other risk-reduction measures.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are covered are indicated in ISO 19014‑1.
ISO 19014‑1 provides methods to determine Machine Performance Level (MPL) for safety-related part of the control system (SRP/CS). The SRP is one that responds to safety-related input signals and generates safety-related output signals. The method recommended is Machine Control System Safety Analysis (MCSSA) method.
The principles of ISO 19014‑1 should also be applied to immediate action warning indicators intended to warn the operator of a possible hazard and require immediate action from the operator to correct and prevent such a hazard. This can assist you in ensuring that the designer understands the operator's reactions required to mitigate a hazard.
By applying various protective measures (both SRP/CS and non-SRP/CS) in compliance with ISO 19014‑1, the end-result of achieving a safe condition can be achieved.
Overall, standardizing principles on the use of functional safety of earth-moving machinery enables you to incorporate best practices for usage and safety of individuals, thereby improving the functionality of the machine and avoiding disruptions in tasks.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 19014‑1:2018 supersedes ISO/TS 15998‑2, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 19014‑1:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO/TS 15998‑2. These include:
- Method for determination of performance levels and machine control system safety analysis,
- Additional requirements for mobile machines
- Environmental test requirements for components of safety controls systems, and
- Requirements for software validation and verification of machine performance levels.
