What is ISO 20023 - Solid biofuels about?
ISO 20023 is a safety standard on solid biofuels. Solid biofuels are a fuel that is produced through contemporary processes from biomass, rather than by the very slow geological processes involved in the formation of fossil fuels, such as oil. ISO 20023 provides principles and requirements for the safe handling and storage of wood pellets in residential and other small-scale applications. ISO 20023 covers the supply chain from the loading of the delivery truck, requirements of delivery trucks, connections to the end user’s store, and the delivery process. ISO 20023 also covers the design and construction of pellet storage systems. ISO 20023 addresses risks of fires, dust explosions, off-gassing, oxygen depletion, damage to appliances and buildings through swelling of pellets, and other health risks. ISO 20023 is applicable to wood pellets.
Who is ISO 20023 - Solid biofuels for?
ISO 20023 on the safety of solid biofuel pellets is relevant to:
- Installers and designers of residential pellets
- Manufacturers, producers, and suppliers of residential pellets
- Biofuel engineers and biofuel manufacturing research engineers
- Chemical engineers
- Mechanical engineers
Why should you use ISO 20023 - Solid biofuels?
There is a continuous global growth in production, storage, handling, bulk transport, and use of solid biofuels, especially in the form of pelletized biofuels. Logistics and the handling of the pellets play a major part in maintaining quality and are therefore also addressed in ISO 20023.
ISO 20023 covers facilities at end-users with a storage capacity <100 t. Typically, prefabricated commercially manufactured storage systems reduce planning and installation efforts significantly compared with individual custom-made pellet stores. They are available in many designs, materials, shapes, and sizes and can be installed in cellars, under carports, in tool sheds, as underground tanks, and in the open. Prefabricated pellet stores usually need a solid and level base. The base carries the static loads at the contact points for the weight of the storage system and maximum capacity of pellets. Small pellet stores (for boilers <50 kW, as typically used in single-family houses) are usually capable of holding fuel for approximately one heating season. ISO 20023 has some underground stores.
Overall, ISO 20023 is useful as it assists with the safe handling and storage of wood pellets in residential and other small-scale applications. ISO 20023 provides a good ventilation system and guidance on the storage systems and on the bags for the delivery of pellets. ISO 20023 also helps in controlling noise pollution. Using ISO 20023 you can provide principles and requirements for the safe handling and storage of wood pellets in residential and other small-scale applications.
