What is ISO 20127 about?
International standard ISO 20127 discusses the physical properties of powered toothbrushes. ISO 20127 specifies requirements and test methods for the physical properties of powered toothbrushes to promote the safety of these products for their intended use.
Powered toothbrushes can have a moving brush head with different motions (e.g., oscillating-rotating, side-by-side), frequencies and velocities.
Note 1: There are different technologies of powered toothbrushes. Common features of those powered toothbrushes to which this ISO 20127 applies are:
- A battery
- A motor
- A mechanical or magnetic drive system
- A moving brush head with tufted filaments
Note 2: The requirements listed in ISO 20127 apply to all types of powered toothbrushes. However, there is a possibility that some requirements are not applicable for all types, for example, brush head plate retention can only be applied if the brush has a head portion that might get detached from the brush shaft.
Note 3: ISO 20127 is not applicable to other types of powered oral hygiene devices (such as powered interdental brushes) or manual toothbrushes.
Who is ISO 20127 for?
ISO 20127 on physical properties of powered toothbrushes is useful for:
- Powered toothbrushes manufacturers and suppliers
- Quality control laboratories
- Dental equipment manufacturers and suppliers
Why should you use ISO 20127?
Powered toothbrushes are used for the removal of dental plaque and oral debris in order to facilitate oral hygiene.
ISO 20127 provides requirements and test methods for the physical properties of powered toothbrushes, that help you to manufacture toothbrushes by considering users’ safety.
ISO 20127 specifies packaging and labelling requirements, including the guidelines for use of a powered toothbrush.
ISO 20127 provides requirements and test methods for the physical properties of powered toothbrushes, that contribute significantly to safety as the fallen off tufts, filaments, and metal parts might cause injury.
What is changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 20127:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 20127:2005, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 20127:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 20127:2005. These include:
- A requirement and a test method for brush head plate retention have been added
- Clarification in scope to include all types of powered toothbrushes
