What is ISO 20504 - Compressive properties of ceramic composites about?
ISO 20504 is an international standard on fine ceramics which covers mechanical properties of ceramic composites at room temperature and the determination of compressive properties.
ISO 20504 describes procedures for the determination of the compressive behaviour of ceramic matrix composite materials with continuous fibre reinforcement at room temperature. This method applies to all ceramic matrix composites with a continuous fibre reinforcement, uni-directional (1D), bidirectional (2D) and tri-directional (xD, with 2 < x < 3), tested along one principal axis of reinforcement or off axis conditions. This method also applies to carbon-fibre-reinforced carbon matrix composites (also known as carbon/carbon or C/C). Two cases of testing are distinguished: compression between platens and compression using grips.
Who is ISO 20504 - Compressive properties of ceramic composites for?
ISO 20504 on Compressive properties of ceramic composites is useful for:
- Fine ceramics manufacturers
- Mechanical engineers
Why should you use ISO 20504 - Compressive properties of ceramic composites?
Among ceramics, porcelains are used in electronics and other high-tech industries, so they must meet highly precise specifications and demanding performance requirements. Today, they are called Fine Ceramics (also known as "advanced ceramics") to distinguish them from conventional ceramics made from natural materials, such as clay and silica rock. Fine Ceramics are carefully engineered materials in which the chemical composition has been precisely adjusted using refined or synthesized raw powder, with a well-controlled method of forming and sintering.
High tensile and compressive strength, thus no sudden failure as compared to conventional ceramics. Increased fracture toughness due to reinforcement. Lightweight due to reduced density. High strength retention at elevated temperatures.
ISO 20504 helps you in determining the compressive properties of ceramic composites which can help you gain an advantage owing to the mechanical properties stated above.
